Van Dyke's One Mile Shires is owned and operated by Duane and Diane Van Dyke of Yamhill, Oregon. They started One Mile Shires in February of 1987 with the purchase of two grey Shires, "Tom" and "Lucy." The team was a wedding gift to one another.  The farm got its name because the old farm, in Gaston, OR, was exactly one mile up the road from the highway.  In 2005, Duane and Diane bought 72 acres outside of Yamhill, OR and moved out that way.  The name is still part of the history of the farm though.

Duane Van Dyke has been around draft horses his entire life. He spent his childhood working with his grandfather around the farm and showing horses at local fairs. Duane has been riding and driving horses for over 40 years. Nowadays, Duane spends his free time farming with, driving, and training the Shires who live at the farm.

Diane Van Dyke, ever supporting her husband's passion in life, is an integral part of each show and fair. She helps to imprint new colts and fillies as well as helping to organize supplies for events. Diane was not raised with horses; but she enjoys spending time with her husband and the rest of the family as they work together at shows and events.

The Van Dyke family shows horses annually at the Eagle Crest Invitational Draft Horse Show, Washington County, Clark County, and Oregon State Fair.  They are also involved in several plowing competitions throughout the year as well as other Oregon Draft Horse Breeders’ Association activities. Show time involves a lot of work and preparation.

One Mile Shires is proud to offer breeding to their stud, "Stoddard Crofter" (aka: Harley), training, and many other services to the public.
