Van Dyke's One Mile Shires is owned and operated by Duane and Diane Van Dyke of Yamhill, Oregon. They started One Mile Shires in February of 1987 with the purchase of two grey Shires, "Tom" and "Lucy." The team was a wedding gift to one another. The farm got its name because the old farm, in Gaston, OR, was exactly one mile up the road from the highway. In 2005, Duane and Diane bought 72 acres outside of Yamhill, OR and moved to allow for more room for their growing herd. Today there are 16 Shire horses on One Mile Shires Farm.
Duane Van Dyke has been around draft horses his entire life. He spent his childhood working with his grandfather around the farm and showing horses at local fairs. Duane has been riding and driving horses for over 40 years. Nowadays, Duane spends his time farming with, driving, and training the Shires who live at the farm as well as clients’ horses. The One Mile Shires hitch is not a corporate hitch with hired help. It is a family affair and a labor of love. Diane and many other family members are intimately involved in the training, care, preparation, and showing of the horses. The farm colors, plum, cream, black, and sage green were the colors at Duane and Diane’s wedding way back in 1987.
One Mile Shires Farm shows horses annually at the Happ’s Horse Power Days, Champoeg Park Plowing Competition, Washington County, Clark County, and Oregon State Fair. They are also involved in several other Oregon Draft Horse Breeders’ Association activities. Show time involves a lot of work and preparation. This year they are also going to be involved in the Portland Rose Festival Parade!
One Mile Shires is proud to offer breeding to their stud, "Stoddard Crofter" (aka: Harley), training to outside clients, driving lessons, hayrides, carriage rides, and many other services to the public.
